Parent Plant Overview
In Southeast Asia, seventeen species of agarwood (Aquilaria) are found,
and half of them produce resinous wood that occurs in the trunks and roots of
trees. The tree grows up to 40 meters and has a huge trunk and multiple
branches. Resin released due to insects makes the wood denser and darker in
color. Only 7% of the agarwood trees become infected by insects and produce
resinous agarwood. So, artificial forestry users inoculate trees with fungus
and obtain wood with damage-sap. Agarwood has a very complex and pleasant smell
and so it is used in incense, perfumes, and small carvings.
Agarwood Essential Oil Description
Agarwood oil manufacturers obtain the oil from the resinous or damaged sap wood by steam
distillation. The oil is a thick brown liquid with an intense sweet musky
scent. Only three drops of oil are produced with 1 kg agarwood. The agarwood
oil contains as many as 150 chemical compounds, and its composition varies
based on the age and species of the tree. It gained immense cultural and
religious importance in ancient times. Its reference is also found in the Bible
and Sanskrit Vedas. The oil is also known as Oud, Eaglewood, or Aloeswood
oil.
Agarwood oil is a precious East Indian oud oil with analgesic,
antiarthritic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its aroma gets better with age.
It blends well with ambrette, cardamom, cedarwood, geranium, patchouli,
galbanum, and rosewood essential oils for diverse purposes.

FAQs
Q. How does agarwood become resinuous?
Ans. Natural damages, wounds or cuts by external living organisms (such as ants) or forces cause fungal infection inside the tree. As a response, the tree produces an aromatic, dark and moist resin called aloes which becomes part of the heartwood. Thus, agarwood becomes resinuous.
Q. How can one know whether agarwood exists inside the tree?
Ans. A common man cannot say whether agarwood exists inside the tree but an experienced woodsman observes the tree and clearly states about the presence of agarwood in the tree.
