Parent Plant Overview
Cardamom is a perennial plant from the ginger family. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia. The plant has thick knobby rhizomes and erect stems with two ranks of lance-shaped linear dark green leaves. It grows as the cane stems from 6 to 15 feet tall in hot, humid conditions in loamy fertile soils under the shade of large trees in rainforests. Guatemala is the leading producer of cardamoms, followed by India.
It produces white to yellowish-white flowers with lilac-purple veins and pink or yellow margins. Yellowish green fruit pods grow through blooms. These small seed pods with a thin papery outer shell and black seeds are known as green cardamoms. They are handpicked and used as a spice in cuisines and beverages.
